Little review about an art festival hold in the Kitano Tenmangu (北野天満宮) shrine of Kyoto during several week-end at the end of 2017 in presence of some stars like Dream Ami des E-Girls 😉 ! The occasion too to get cultured by discovering this place dedicated to the god of art and also of education... 🏫

J'ai été informé sur Twitter par un ami français fan du groupe 杏仁ショーケストラ (Annin Showchestra) présent à Japan Expo, en juillet de la même année et qui annonçait sa participation à ce festival.
En l'occurrence, le groupe instrumental en question se produisait lors de la cérémonie d'ouverture du festival le 21 octobre. L'ambition de celui-ci est de "connecter la beauté du Japon à l'avenir". Il s'agit plus concrètement d'organiser des expositions et activités autour des traditions japonaises et de la mode actuelle... C'est ainsi qu'à côté d'ateliers (payants) sur l'ikebana, la calligraphie... on pouvait aussi trouver une exposition de mode consacrée à l'Idol Itô Marika (伊藤 万理華) des Nogizaka46 (乃木坂46), qui a pris sa retraite du groupe fin décembre.
En revanche, les lives de la cérémonie d'ouverture étaient gratuits, ce qui nous arrangeait bien, ma femme et moi ^^ ! Prévus sur 2 jours, nous devions d'abord retrouver le samedi après-midi un groupe de taiko, Kamiwakakai (神若会), puis donc les jeunes femmes d'Annin Showchestra en collaboration avec les Ikenoboys, quintuor proposant une forme d'ikebana (arrangement floral) s'affranchissant quelque peu des codes traditionnels. En fait, l'ensemble de taiko n'a guère joué plus de 6-7min, tout juste le temps de prendre une ou deux photos (les vidéos aussi étaient autorisées).
Le lien n'est pas artificiel ; il faut pour le comprendre, connaître un peu la mythologie japonaise puisque ce sanctuaire fut construit pour apaiser l'âme d'une vraie personne, Sugawara no Michizane (菅原道真), un poète et érudit de l'époque Heian (9-11e siècle), mort après une intense campagne de calomnie de la part de ses rivaux et dont on raconte qu'il revient sous la forme d'un dieu vengeur, Tenjin (天神), provoquant une série de catastrophes. Sous sa forme apaisée, il est censé apporté la réussite artistique et scolaire, ce qui explique l'affluence de jeunes élèves et étudiants 😏, mais donc aussi qu'on lui consacre un festival dédié aux arts. Fondé en 947, le sanctuaire a vu son culte essaimer et compte aujourd'hui plus de 12000 sanctuaires affiliés dans tout le Japon, l'un des plus importants.
Le prêtre a aussi mentionné le mythe plus lointain d'Amaterasu, déesse solaire qui s'était enfermée dans une caverne et qui fut attirée au-dehors par un banquet et la danse coquine d'une autre déesse, Uzume. 😳
Transition toute trouvée, on reprenait le spectacle avec les très mignonnes [kawaiiii !!] Annin Showchestra, coiffées à la Chun-Li dans Street Fighter 😉, un groupe instrumental aux inspirations très diverses puisqu'il réunit une contrebasse, un clavier, une percussion et un... accordéon ainsi qu'un erhu (sorte de violon chinois à 2 cordes) !!
Elles interprétaient plusieurs morceaux dont 1-2 reprises célèbres, tandis que les Ikenoboys transformait leur scène en un bel écrin de fleurs.
Désolé pour la qualité des photos et vidéos, mais le chapiteau était bien utile pour nous protéger du typhon en approche ! 😨 Checkez les tweets un peu plus bas en compléments ;-)

La cérémonie s'achevait enfin par l'interprétation au piano du thème du festival (musique de fond du site web) par Ayano Uesugi.
Après un "vidage de salle" aussi inattendu (on n'a pas vu où il était indiqué qu'il fallait réserver sa place pour cela) que ridicule vu le peu de gens présents, commençait le "clou" de la journée, l'interview radio sur FM802 de la vedette pop Dream Ami, une des chanteuses des E-Girls et de l'ex-unit Dream, qui se concentre désormais sur sa carrière solo. Là malheureusement, photos et vidéos interdites. Nous y assistions debout à côté du chapiteau, alors qu'il restait plein de places assises (absence de pub et mauvais temps oblige) ! 😠
- les 3 choses qu'elle emmène toujours avec elle en voyage: des écouteurs pour la musique, une peluche et des snacks.
- ce qu'elle veut essayer à Kyoto: les fameux bonbons de sucre qui accompagnent le matcha
- ce qu'elle voudrait faire à l'avenir: développer ses connaissances générales et son vocabulaire; elle a un petit complexe par rapport aux conversations sociétales.
- ...
Le lendemain, les activités scéniques furent annulées en raison du typhon. Dommage, on aurait pu y voir la célèbre Hitoto Yô (一青 窈), interprète notamment d'un des plus gros hits karaoké des années 2000 et 2010, ainsi que le jeune girls band orienté soul-gospel Little Glee Monster, connu en Occident notamment pour son générique de Boruto.
Les goodies de Itô Marika n'étaient quant à eux en vente qu'à partir du mois de novembre, mais je n'ai plus eu l'occasion d'y retourner...

In fact this band was performing during the opening ceremony of the festival on the 21st of October. Its ambition is to "link the beaty of Japan to the future". More concretly, it consists in organizing exhibitions and worshops about the Japanese traditions and the trending mode... Thus besides (paying) workshops on ikebana, calligraphy, etc, one could also find an exhibition of mode dedicated to the Idol Itô Marika (伊藤 万理華) from Nogizaka46 (乃木坂46), who retired from the band at the end of December.
On the other side, the lives of the opening ceremony were free, which was perfect for my wife and me ^^ ! Planned over 2 days, it was announcing fisrtly in the Saturday afternoon a taiko troop, Kamiwakakai (神若会), then the ladies of Annin Showchestra, in collaboration with the Ikenoboys, quintuor proposing a form of ikebana (floral arrangement) overpassing somewhat the traditional codes. In fact, the taiko band just played 6-7min, just the time to take 1 or 2 pictures (videos were allowed too).
Then the Mayor of Kyoto, the Great Priest of the shrine mainly and the organiser interviewed by a local radio animator explained the purposes of the festival, in particular its localization in a sacred place a priori dedicated to prayer and meditation... even if inspired by the free concerts of the Yasaka shrine.
The link is not artificial; to understand it, one needs to know a little the Japanese mythology as this shrine was built to soothe the soul of a real person, Sugawara no Michizane (菅原道真), a poet and scholar of the Heian era (9-11th century), dead after a harsh calomnia campaign from some rivals and who returned as an avenging god, Tenjin (天神), provoking a series of catastrophes. Under his soothed form, he is told to bring success in art and studies, which explains the affluence of young students 😏, but also the organization of an art festival. Founded in 947, the shrine saw its cult spread in all the Japan and is now one of the biggest with more than 12000 affilated shrines.
The priest also mentioned the more ancient myth of Amaterasu, solar goddess who locked herself in a cave and was appealed outside by a feast and the suggestive dance of another goddess, Uzume. 😳

Easy transition, the show was starting again with the very cute (kawaiii !!) Annin Showchestra, hair-dressed like Chun-Li in Street Fighter 😉, an instrumental band with very diverse inspirations as it gathers a conterbass, a keyboard, drums, and... an accordeon as well as an erhu (kind of Chinese violin with 2 cords) !!
They performed several tunes including 1-2 famous covers, while the Ikenoboys weere transforming the stage into a pretty flowered frame.
Sorry for the quality of pictures and video above but the marquee was really useful to protect us from the coming typhoon ! 😨 Let's check too the tweet below (RT by one of the band's member).

The ceremony ended finally wy the performance of the festival's anthem (the background music of the website) by Ayano Uesugi aon piano.After a "room emptying" as inexpected (didn't see where it was written we had to reserve a seat for that) as ridiculous with regard to the number of people, the "main event" of the day started with the radio interview on FM802 of the popular star Dream Ami, one of the singers of E-Girls and of ex-unit Dream, who is now focusing on her solo career. Here unfortunately, pictures and videos were prohibited. We were assisting to that standing beside the marquee while there were still many seats (because of no advertisement and bad weather) ! 😠
Hopefully Ami managed to transmit her good mood and to play on her ex-Idol experience to feel "surprised" there were so many people despite the circonstances and to thank everybody, worrying too for the people under the rain (which was not so strong yet). From this interview including questions from the public, we got some personal information 😊:
- the 3 things she always bring in travel: earphones for music, a sof puppet, and snacks.
- what she wants to try in Kyoto: the famous sugar sweets that come along with the matcha.
- what she would like to personaly develop: her general culture and vocabulary; she has a small complex when it comes to social and political conversations.

The next day, activities were cancelled due to the typhoon. Alas, I wish we could have seen the famous Hitoto You (一青 窈), performer notably of one of the biggest karaoke hits of the 2000-2010s as well as the young girls band soul-gospel Little Glee Monster, known in Occident in particular for their opening of Boruto.
The goodies of Itô Marika were on sale only from November on, but I did no more got the occasion to go back to the festival...
