On this 31th of December 2016, what did the NHK's 67th Kouhaku Uta Gassen (紅白歌合戦) offer to us ? Always an occasion to sum up the cultural year, one can also see wonderful kimonos weared by the traditional artists, more discret in the media the rest of the time.
Placed under the sign of the Rio Olympic Games and of Shin Godzilla among others, it was co-animated by the "team captains": actress and model Arimura Kasumi (有村架純), who participates to a famous ad campaign of AU (red team), and Inohara Yoshihiko (井ノ原快彦), Arashi band's member (white team).

If the Reds (female vocals) could rely on the 1st participation of Utada Hikaru for her highly-hoped comeback after a 5-year break, the Whites (male vocals) were favorites with the ones of the humorists of Radio Fish, big spring hit, of Kiritani Kenta, popular hero beside Arimura Kasumi, and finally of Radwimps thanks to the theme of the huge success in animation movie Kimi no na wa (Your Name) !
67e Kôhaku Uta Gassen (2016)
Anthologies et/and frustration

Ils chantent un de leurs titres de 2007, ズッコケ男道

It's a pop-rock duet star in the late 90s-2000s, PUFFY (aka Puffy AmiYumi), who replies with a medley : アジアの純真 (Asia no junshin, "Asia's innocence"), 渚にまつわるエトセトラ (Nagisa ni matsu waru ETCAETERA, "About the shores, etc"). She were participating for the 1st time, to celebrate their 20th year of career !

Then it's AAA, a male and female band between Idols and boysbands/girlsbands who follows with "Hurricane Lili, Boston Mary", theme song of a drama in 2006. Last year, they were in the girls' team but this time they were in the white team, while getting everybody turn their scarf ! Note that one of the 2 women, Chiaki, will left the band in March 2017.

The danse-oriented super-band of the E-girls take over the dancefloor with Dance with me now, a song of their 2016 Best of, with a choreography which beats all the "challengers" of the evening ! Here too, an announced retirement: singer-dancer Erie from unit Dream.

We have a presentation of the "jury", mainly Olympic and Paralympic athletes back from Rio, and actors and actresses such as Aragaki Yui (新垣結衣) from drama Nigeru wa haji daga yaku ni tatsu (逃げるは恥だが役に立つ, subtitled in English "We married as a job") starring singer Hoshino Gen (星野源).
Note that the mangaka Akimoto Osamu, self-proclaimed fan of PUFFY, was invited for the end of its humorous manga こち亀, "Kochi kame" (abreviated), not very known abroad but which is very popular in Japan, and which holds nothing less than the record of volumes for a manga: 200 (yes, the local policeman Ryoutsu Kankichi beats for now easily Son-Goku and Luffy... on that point ^^) !

Some of the E-girls "challengers", precisely, who take their turn on the stage, with the young Idols of the 欅坂46 (Keyakizaki46), freshly launched in Major in 2016. The little sisters of the Nogizaka46 perform their 1st single : Silent Majority. A title which calls for freedom of choice, if not individualism, which is not precisely the slogan of Idols world though... 😛 A choreography simpler than the E-girls one's, but perfectly synchronised for this 1st participation.

(Ruten no hatoba, "comings and goings on the platform"), getting the Nogizaka46 as dancers, in the middle of who he turns into a Charming Prince !

It's miwa ho replies to him with 結 (Yui, "Link"), accompanied by a chorus of highschool girls from Kumamoto, strongly hit by earthquakes in April 2016. A performance which recalls strongly her live in Paris with students of the Touhoku some years after the tsunami and Fukushima.

We come back to the usual alternance with the Johnny's of Sexy Zone and their song (Yobisute, "Familiarly speaking"), released a short time ago in October 2016.

(An'ta no kadou, "Your flowers' path"), a song she already performed at the Kouhaku in 2002. She is accompanied as dancer by the too much kawaii Honda Marin (本田 真凜), young hope of the Japanese figure skating, as well as by some AKB48 members as backdancers.

Sekai no Owari présents a medley of RPG, theme-song of an animation movie of Crayon Shin-chan, and of their last-to-date single at that time, Hey Ho.

Ichikawa Yukino (市川由紀乃), fan of Hoshino Gen, celebrates her 1st participation, in front of her mother very moved, while she debuted at the end of the 90s. After a break where she took a "normal" job, she had come back in 2006 and one of her 2016 single was quite successful among Enka style: 心かさねて (kokoro kasanete, "Accumulate the hearts").

During an interlude, we learn that 2 persons try to force the entrance of the NHK Hall by pretending to having lost their invitation card. Yet they look like 2 big stars of the TV shows, animators Matsuko Deluxe and Tamori...

The following opposition begins with the Sandaime J-Soul Brothers with Welcome to Tokyo, along with 100 backdancers equipped of LED combinaisons and dispatched in all the hall ! The parent band EXILE was celebrating their 15 years at this moment.
Sandaime J Soul Brothers (3JSB) from EXILE TRIBE

Then it's the less flashy but more glamorous duet of Kôzai Kaori (香西かおり), Enka singer, and the gorgeous Hashimoto Manami as dancer, a gravure Idol and actress. She sings すき (Suki, "I like you"), after an intro with excerpt of the NHK drama (auto-promo inside ^^) about the famous samurai Sanada Yukimura, accompanied with the violin of Miura Fumiaki

Then we go and see the J-rock singer Sheena Ringo (椎名林檎) in live from "Neo Tokyo 2016" (the forum of the Tokyo City hall) for 青春の瞬き (Seishun no mabataki, "An blink of youth") with a show half flash-mob (freezed walking people), half projection-mapping.

Back on stage with Fukuda Kôhei (福田こうへい) and the song 東京五輪音頭 (Tokyo Gorin ondo, "Tokyo Olympic Games' tune", in 2020). In front of many artists dressed like for a traditional matsuri, he gets brought on a chair up to the tribune's stage !

Far more simply, Ayaka (絢香) performs again, for her 10 years of career, her 1st big success: 三日月 (Mikazuki, "Moon Crescent"), a ballad a bit sad where she can fully demonstrate her vocal skill.

The reply is given by the duet Gô Hiromi (郷ひろみ) as singer and Tsuchiya Tao (土屋 太鳳), actress, as dancer, for the Kayokyoku song of 1994 言えないよ (Ienai yo, "Unspeakable"). Tao, who studied the traditional Japanese dance (buyou) danced in the Japanese version of the famous Music Video of the Australian singer Sia, as it was released in Japan only in March 2016.

The Johnny's V6 propose a medley of WAになって踊ろう (Wa ni natte odorou, "Let's make a circle and dance") and Honey Beat, up to the small stage. They get interrogated just before by their colleague from Arashi for the Big News: one of them, Nagano Hiroshi, got married this year !

We find again our lost friends Matsuko and Tamori in backstage, which allows us to discover the machinery which Mizumori is still riding !

Like Ayaka a bit earlier, Ikimonogakari (いきものがかり) perform their 1st single and great hit SAKURA to celebrate their 10th year in Major. One week later, the pop-rock trio announced they were having a break to rest a little and get some time for themselves. I was so lucky for having seen them live just before ^^' !

It's time for the "half-time" break during which a first count gives 922 066 voices for the reds and 1 435 170 for the whites. To discover the end, it's over there ;-) !
