Nino comes on stage to make his half-time show along with Lady Gag... Watanabe Naomi and several other humorists ^^ But it is the real Austin Mahone who comes and sings during the sketch of Blouson Chiemi, from whom he got to become big in Japan ! She indeed became famous with the male duet "with Bthanks to a sketch somewhat a mirror to the music video of the singer where she plays a man-eater "career woman" while swinging on the hit Dirty work.

The NHK takes the opportunity to make a news break at 21o'.

Other humorous discovery of the year, the comical musician Miyazon introduces the NHK's 4K and even 8K to come channels !

Nishino Kana (西野カナ, 8) gives a good dose of peps with Patt' with a small stomac size and a quick transformist trick inside. A single ranking at "only" 54th in the yearly Billboard Hot 100 due to the late release of the corresponding album, Love it.
One of the oldest Johnny's, TOKIO (24), go and visit several construction sites for the JO of 2020 then sing Ambitious Japan. They are still 5 but the bassist Yamaguchi Tetsuya will soon get caught in a harassment scandal while being drunk...

The "supervisor" interrupts the program to allow the president of the Kouhaku, the actor Uchimura Teruyoshi, to fulfill his dream of dancing with the Keyakizaka 46. And, surprise, they come back on stage to dance again the refrain of Fukyôwaon with him !

Tribute to Hirao Masaaki (平尾 昌章), deceased on the 21/07/2017, singer and composer for the enka star Itsuki Hiroshi  (五木ひろし) or also the great Idol Matsuda Seiko for example, but some people would probably better know his work on the anime Galaxy Express 999 ;-). Itsuki sings Yozora (夜空).

The older sisters of the Keyakizaka46, les Nogizaka46 (乃木坂46), ask to Bananaman if he wouldn't like dance with them on Influencer, song which granted them with the Japan Records Awards Great Prize, as he dreams so much to do, but that's the Kouhaku, he can't leave his commentator's role... can he ?

Nino puts the highlights on shougi, this kind of Japanese chess that Naruto's fans came to know through the character of Shikamaru, and which just had a great year in media, from the retirement of the funny champion "Hifumin" present in the jury, to the anime and the 2 movies (in which plays the Red captain Arimura) of San gatsu no Lion (March comes in like a lion), and the amazing pro debuts of the young genius Fujii Sôta He interviews "The" shougi master, Habu Yoshiharu (羽生 善治), recordman of the tournaments titles, who had just been beaten by Fujii Sôta.
He then chooses the 1st chorus songItsudemo yume wo (いつでも 夢 を), a cklassic of the Kouhaku since the 60s, accompanied on piano by Yoshiki !

A suivre !
Short interlude with a mini-episode of the NHK drama "Hyokko" (ひよっこ), ambience Olympic Games of 1964, with in particular the captain of the Reds... and an intruder who ressembles to the singer of the Southern All Stars... To be continued !

Matsuda Seiko (松田 聖子, 21) sings her recent single Atarashii ashita (新しい明日) in a sober but romantically rose and blue ambiance.
Hirai Ken (平井 堅, 8) makes his crooner stuff on Non-Fiction in a more depressed mood with his eternal bouquet in the hand (he brings it in the music video and during all the studio performances of the song !), accompanied by the amputee dancer Oomae Kôishi (大前 光一).

Tortoise Matsumoto (トータス 松本), singer of the J-Rock/Blues-Rockabilly band Ulfuls and Sheena Ringo (椎名 林檎) the eclectic Rock and Jazz singer perform together for both teams ! They sing Menuki-dori (目抜き通り) with an intro in English and  a jazzy ambiance.
The electro-pop trio Perfume (10) is not at the NHK Hall, but on the top of a building in Shibuya, for a remake of a part of the music video for Tokyo girl !

X Japan step on stage with only ToshI accompanied by Yoshiki wearing a neck brace, on piano, for Endless rain, all in emotion. Then Yoshiki gets up and goes down the stairs... And there, drums appear from the ground, and that's the time to unleash all the energy on Kurenai (紅) with the other members !!

Yamamoto Sayaka qui a sorti un 2e album solo, n'est pas en reste avec San-byaku-roku-djû-5-nichi no kamihikôki (365日の紙飛行機) en 2e, et enfin la future "reine" élue 2018 des AKB, Matsui Jurina, a droit à Oogoe Diamond (大声ダイヤモンド) en 3e.

For Watanabe Mayu from the AKB48 (10) who announced her sotsugyo (retirement from the band), this is the last Kouhaku. This year, their challenge is that the 3 songs of their medley are just announced live right now, to say, after a vote by fans ! And opportunately, the number 1 is Djû-ichi-gatsu no anklet (11月のアンクレット) whose center was Mayuyu... Yamamoto Sayaka who released a 2nd solo album, is granted too with San-byaku-roku-djû-5-nichi no kamihikôki (365日の紙飛行機) in 2nd,  and finally the future elected "queen" 2018 of the AKB, Matsui Jurina, gets Oogoe Diamond (大声ダイヤモンド) in 3rd. All with the support of Sashihara Rino the current n°1 who, very busy besides, had announced she wouldn't run for this title again. At the end of this medley, Mayuyu deposits  symbolically her micro on the stage.

Ils interprètent Koyoi no tsuki no yô ni (今宵の月のように), un de leurs plus grands hits sorti il y a 20 ans.

To recover from these emotions, let's rock with the energic, despite their age, Elephant Kashimashi (エレファントカシマシ) participating for the 1st time for their 30 years of career ! They perform Koyoi no tsuki no yô ni (今宵の月のように), one of their greatest hits released 20 years ago.
After an ad for the drama Ashita wa dokokara, Matsu Takako (松 たか子) gets on the stage for the eponymous theme song. It is her 3rd participation, 18 years after. Yet she was meanwhile famous for the Japanese version of Frozen~Let it go, but couldn't accept the invitation to the Kouhaku 2015.

Hoshino Gen (星野 源, 3) pays homage to the different kinds of families with Family song, a song of him once again linked to a popular drama, this time Kahogo no Kahoko.
Superfly makes her 2nd participation in a row with (at last !) her most famous song: Ai wo komete hanataba wo (愛をこめて花束を), rock ballad of 2008, still in the karaoke top 50 !

Back to the short drama Hyokko : in fact, the singer of Sazan, Kuwata Keisuke, plays the role of Hamaguchi Kuranosuke (浜口 庫之助), singer songwriter born 100 years ago (dead in 1990) and he performs Sayonara Namida-kun, a song of 1965.

Takahashi Mariko (高橋 真梨子, 5), chanteuse de Kayôkyoku populaire plutôt dans les années 70-80, chante for you toujours dans son style très discret les mains jointes.

The most popular Johnny's band, Arashi (嵐, 9) arrives with of course the captain of the Whites Nino, in dazzling costumes for a medley of Guts ! and Doors.
Takahashi Mariko (高橋 真梨子, 5), Kayoukyoku singer more popular in the 70s-80s, sings for you always in her very discreet style, hands crossed.

Ce qui signifie... Oui !

Hikawa Kiyoshi (氷川 きよし, 18), the "Prince of Enka" sings Kiyoshi no Zundoko bushi (きよしのズンドコ節), a song from the 1930s rearranged several times, in 2002 by Hikawa, and recently again used as a commercial jingle. He yet got noticed recently in a more rock and young still as he performed one of the Dragon Ball Super openings !
"Finally", we see a retrospective of the appearances and big hits of Amuro Namie Which means that... Yes ! Here comes THE great J-Pop star of the year, since the announce of her retirement at only 40... In fatc in duplex from another recording studio to sing Hero, theme of the NHK show on the Olympic Games 2016. She seems very moved for her last participation in the Kouhaku, which is too her first since a long time, Amuro having focused herself on live stages rather than media after her turn to the hip-hop / RnB style.

Finally / Namie Amuro

We go in duplex from the Yokohama Arena with Kuwata Keisuke (桑田 佳祐) who is the song choice of... the Red captain (who prefers thus being "corporate" rather than the promotion of the female vocals ;-p !). He indeed sings Wakai hiroba (若い 広場), theme song of the NHK drama Hyokko of which we spoke above, with a slight tune of rumba.

Ishikawa Sayuri (石川 さゆり) celebrates her 40 years of participation in the Kouhaku with Tsunagu-kaikyo, Fuyu keshiki (津軽海峡・冬景色, again ^^') and closes the Red turns.
On the Whites side, the last ones are the pop-folk duet Yuzu (ゆず, 8) who celebrate their 20 years of career. They sing their song created for the OG of 2004, Eikou no kakihashi (栄光の架橋), with background images of the ones of 2016.

Final Result: large victory of the Whites by 2 237 644 voices against 1 432 371, including 1305 vs 1079 among the spectators of the stage. I don't know well if it includes the jury, who had brutally taken away the victory promised by the telespectators from the Whites last year, but it is Nino who receives the trophy, and we leave with the traditional Hotaru no Hikari (蛍の光) by most of the artists.

Conclusion

After the protests about the vote system of the previous edition, the NHK seems to have corrected back things, but registered her worst audience ever (yet still above 33%) for this show, excepting the last appearance of Amuro Namie who recorded a jump up to nearly 50% ! This proves once again that her retirement had a huge impact on the Japanese society ! This is also a clue about the importance or the aura that the Kouhaku still has among artists of all styles, including a great popstar like Amuro who takes the time to come back a last time on this stage where she had a lot of feelings when she was younger.
NHK has now to pray for having good songs in 2018, and also that the correction in the voting system will give again people some interest in participating...
