69th Kouhaku Uta Gassen 2018 - Part.2/2 (Fr/Eng)

Here is the 2nd half-time of the "Song contest between the Reds and Whites", the Kouhaku of the New Year's Eve on the NHK (1st half-time over there). Are the Whites (male vocals) going to succeed in keeping their lead in points and getting the Victory ?

Da Pump stay but pass literally on the front stage to celebrate their great comeback after 10 years of oblivion, separations and renewal, with the title USA and its viral choreography. A lot of artists who played during the 1st half come to unwind behind them!
Another comeback, after a quite shorter time yet, Ikimonogakari (いきものがかり), who just returned from a one-year-and-a-half "break" (Kiyoe released a solo album, Yoshiki collaborated with other singers, Hotaka changed more his activities by doing interviews and reports). In the absence, exceptional for a "young" invited artist, of any new track released (only an ad song at the end of the year), they cover one of their old hits, Joyful, with lots of scarf rotations in the public!

Due to the success of the cover by their Thai sister band BNK48, it's Koi suru fortune cookie (恋するフォーチュンクッキー) that the AKB48 come and sing in duo whith her, very moved, and half in Thai thus. A premiere!
The famous actor and singer Fukuyama Masaharu (福山 雅治) sings Zero (零, which usually is read rei), from a Detective Conan movie, then Koshi-en (甲子園), to celebrate the 100th highschool baseball tournament at the Koshi-en stadium, live from his concert's hall. His song was used by the NHK to illustrate their cover of the event.

The sempai Arashi welcome the Johnny's band King & Prince for their premiere at the Kouhaku, with Cinderella girl, theme song of the drama Hana nochi hare in which one of them acts, sequel of the famous Hana yori dango in which one of the Arashi played! Another point in common, K&P are only 5 left. Like a "baton touch" when we know that a few weeks later, Arashi announced their future indefinite break at the end of 2020.
Perfume regret they can't meet Suzu this time, because they perform a medley of Future pop and Electro world from a concert hall.

Miyama Hiroshi (三山 ひろし) retries his record of kendama he missed the previous year, on a Sakamoto Kyu song, Igosso tamashii (いごっそ魂). And this time is the good one! DJ Koo, from trf, participated in 3rd position ^^

Elles chantent Kaeri michi wa tômawari shitaku naru (帰り道は遠回りしたくなる).
The electro-pop-rock band Sekai no Owari comes back with all the members this year to sing Sazanka (サザンカ), theme song of the NHK show on the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2018 in Korea, an occasion for a short retrospective movie.
It is the turn of the Nogizaka46 (乃木坂46), in a new costume, simple but original as always. It is the last Kouhaku for Nishino Nanase who will graduate shortly after, and who is center on this occasion. She receives a video message from her parents and the comic Bananaman whom she is a fan of. They perform Kaeri michi wa tômawari shitaku naru

Interview of an enka star, Kitajima Saburo (北島 三郎), 5 years after hie retirement from the Kouhaku. According to this veteran, the show is a bridge which encourages to go to the next year, even after a difficult year with natural catastrophes, etc. His presence, out of the competition, is also due to the performance of 2 of his disciples, invited for the first times (out of the competition too), the Kitajima Kyodai (北島兄弟), to say, the Kitajima brothers, though they don't have the same blood (Kitayama Takeshi, 北山たけし, and Ôe Yutaka, 大江裕). They start singing... Brothers, a kayoukyoku-style title. Saburo joins them riding a giant samurai helmet for Matsuri (まつり).

Séquences nostalgies et double dose de Rouges avec aiko qui reprend un de ses classiques, Kabutomushi (カブトムシ), et Matsuda Seiko (松田 聖子) qui enchaîne un long medley de ses débuts d'Idol, dans les années 80 : Kaze tachinu (風立ちぬ), Heart no earring (ハートのイアリング), Tengoku no kiss (天国のキッス) et Nagisa no balcony (渚のバルコニー)!

The Kouhaku had launched a site where we could tell which songs of Matsutoya Yumi (松任 谷由実) we loved and it received over 14000 messages. For her only 3rd exceptional appearance, "Yuming" covers her Hikoki-gumo (ひこうき雲), made famous by the animation movie of Hayao Miyazaki Kaze tachinu (The wind rises) and Yasashisa ni tsutsumareta nara (やさしさに包まれたなら), utilized too by Miyazaki in Kiki's delivery service, and which makes aiko cry a river 😭.
Auto-promo of the drama Hanbun, Aoi, then with Hoshino Gen (星野源) who sings its theme song Idea.

We arrive at the male equivalent of Aimyon in the 1st part, with Yonezu Kenshi (米津 玄師) and his mega hit Lemon, tied up to the drama Unnatural, but which is widely known by itself, spreading up to record-breaking levels (>240 millions views, >2 millions downloads, n°1 of nearly all charts : karaoke, internet search, rental... according to the NHK short introduction movie).
And it is even more exceptional when considering it is his 1st live TV appearance, from the reproduction of the Sistine Chapel of the Otsuka museum in Tokushima prefecture, his birth country, in memory of his grand-father who died the previous year! For the occasion, NHK committed to high standards, with thousands candles, a dancer and several background performers who redid the music video's choreography!
At the end of the transmission (live), while he was just replying to the thanks by expressing his own gratitude, Uchimura and Suzu can't help themselves saying "he spoke!" ^^'

But let's keep in serious and as much moving stuff with Misia who sings Ai no katachi (アイノカタチ), from the drama Gibo to Musume no Blues, then Tsutsumikomu yoni (つつみ込むように…), more in her predilection soul style. Her long-hold notes amazed many people!

They finally join the other artists on the main stage, singing Happiness, in order to go on a happier tone toward the new year and the new era, which wasn't yet named Reiwa...

Sazan, out of the competition, comes finally and celebrates its 40 years singing Kibou no Wadachi (希望の轍) then Katte ni Sinbad (勝手にシンドバッド) during which the other artists progressively gather. Yuming even makes a short duet with them.

Résultat final :
jury : 9-2 pour les Rouges
salle: 1176-1453 pour Blancs
téléspectateurs : 240537-411931 pour les Blancs
Final Result:
jury : 9-2 for the Reds
hall : 1176-1453 for the Whites
TV audience : 240537-411931 for the Whites

Apparently still looking for a balance in the vote regarding the overwhelmingly pro-whites TV voters demography to let a chance for the Reds, the voting system change again. A team must now gain 2 out of the 3 categories to win: Whites 2, Reds 1, therefore it is Arashi, via Sakurai Sho, who keeps the symbolic trophy, while we are leaving on the traditional Hotaru no Hikari (蛍の光) by most of the artists.

Conclusion

This Kouhaku reached the high standards needed with regard to its historical particularity, thanks to extraordinary participations (Kitajima Saburo, Matsutoya Yumi...), or premieres of very popular artists, as well among the "youngsters" (Yonezu Kenshi, Aimyon, King & Prince...) as among the "old timers" (Junretsu...), and with a voting system clearer but not yet totally equitable (the jury's vote is so much opposed to the others that one can only imagine they knew they had to vote for the Reds to keep a small hope of victory to the girls ^^).
Only defect to indicate, a first part with a bad rhythm due mainly to a never-ending medley for the very young children who, in my opinion, had probably troubles keeping interested until then, and to keep focused with the many people involved and the clumsy story...
Efforts of the previous edition to correct the scandal of the voting system in 2016 probably paid too, as the audience rose for both half-times, with a peak at the end for Southern All-Star and the announce of the results (45,5%), which however stays below Amuro Namie's peak in 2017. During the show, it is without surprise Yonezu Kenshi who attracted people the most with 44%.
